Behavior

Agressive contact (AGC): When one individual hits, kicks, bites, threatens another group member

Approach (APP): One individual deliberately walks or runs toward another group member.

Avoid/flee (AV): One animal walks or runs away from an approaching group member

Carry/hold infant (CART): Walking or sitting while supporting an immature group member.

Chase (CH): One individual runs after another group member. State if aggressive or play.

Climb (CL): Traveling up or down from vertical structures.

Aberrant fecal (COPRO): Eating, manipulating, examining feces

Copulation (COP): A male mounts and thrusts a female.

Display (DIS): Individual is usually piloerect with shoulders hunched, running across exhibit, may hit or kick an inanimate object, run past or charge another individual. Pant hoots often accompany this behavior.

Eat (EAT): Consuming food

Examine, explore, manipulate object (EXXP): Examining or manipulating an object. Includes next building and using enrichment devices.

Follow (FOLL): One individual is deliberately walking behind another.

Forage (FOR): Actively searching for food/vegetation to consume

Genital rub (GEN): Female rubs her genitalia against another female's genitalia

Groom (GR): Picking through hair or at skin, removing debris with hand or mouth. Includes: groom self (grs); groom another (grg), receiving grooming (grr) and groom mutual (grm)

Hold (HOLD): Securely grasping an object with hand

Idle (IDLE): Not exhibiting active behavior. Includes sitting, laying, staring into space

Inspect (INSP): An animal sniffs or probes the genitalia of another individual.

Look out bars (LOB): An animal is actively watching activity or individual through the bars

Look out corral (LOC): Individual climbs to an elevated area corral and watches an activity or another individual outside of the enclosure.

Masturbate (MAST): Self stimulation of the genitalia. Indicate if animal is watching another individual while masturbating.

Mount (MNT): One individual mounts another but thrusting does not occur.

Nurse (NUR): Offspring (usually) is suckling a female.

Out of view (OOV): Focal animal is out of sight.

Pant hoot (PH): The loud vocalization typical of chimpanzees.

Pant grunt (PG): A series of short guttural grunts given by a subordinate animal to a higher ranking animal.

Play (PL): Includes wrestling, tickling, chasing and gymnastics. May be accompanied by a play face and "laughing". Indicate if alone or social.

Present (PR): Female may crouch with genitalia directed to male or merely approach and orient genitalia in the male's line of vision. Indicate if sexual or submissive.

Solicit sex (SOL): An animal approaches another and solicits sexual behavior by presenting, head bobbing, swaying, penile display. Also includes attention getting behavior exhibited toward another social group.

Submissive (SUB): Includes head bobbing, pant grunting, crouching.

Touch/embrace (TOC): One individual extends hand or arms and gently makes contact with another group member.

Travel (TR): Walking from one area to another area.

Watch/stare (WA): One individual is actively watching another group member, often within a few inches of one another.
