Robyn Barbiers received her B.S. and D.V.M. from Michigan State University. She has worked as a veterinarian
at emergency veterinary clinics and zoos for more than 20 years. In
1994, Barbiers became the director of Veterinary Services at Lincoln Park
Zoo, where her responsibilities included all aspects of healthcare for
zoo animals. She added the title of associate general curator to her
list of duties in 2000 and began overseeing management of animal-care
staff, collections and exhibits. She was named the zoo’s general
curator in 2002 and, subsequently, vice president of Collections. Barbiers
is a past chair of the Association of Zoos and Aquariums
(AZA) Animal Health Committee and currently serves on the AZA Accreditation Commission. She chairs the editorial board of the Journal of Zoo and Wildlife
Medicine, where she has also served as associate editor, and is a past member of the American Association of Zoo Veterinarians’ Ethics
Committee.
