Owen Slater, D.V.M.
Owen Slater, D.V.M., received his post-secondary education from the University of Guelph, where he completed degrees in ecology and veterinary medicine. Prior to coming to Lincoln Park Zoo, he worked for the Calgary Zoo in Alberta, Canada and as a mixed-animal veterinarian in rural Alberta.
His past wildlife experiences include conducting West Nile virus surveillance testing for the Canadian Cooperative Wildlife Health Centre and volunteering for a Jane Goodall Institute chimpanzee sanctuary in Uganda, where he coordinated the first annual Pan African Sanctuary Alliance Healthcare Workshop in addition to providing veterinary assistance to the chimpanzees. He received a grant from the Geraldine R. Dodge foundation to conduct a pilot research project on antimicrobial resistance in mountain gorillas living in Bwindi Impenetrable National Park in Uganda, and he is currently conducting research on blood-borne parasites in free-ranging caribou in the Canadian Arctic.
